IonQ stock exploded higher today, jumping about 23% to US$32.59 after investors absorbed fresh Q3 2026 results. The move comes after a choppy three months where the share price had fallen around 27% over 90 days. The headline this quarter is not the profit print. It is the balance sheet and valuation strain that now defines the story.
IonQ just raised US$2b, lifting pro forma cash to about US$3.7b, while the stock trades on a P/E of 54.9x. That multiple sits above the broader US semiconductor sector, even as earnings are projected to decline over the coming years.
Love IonQ's fresh US$3.7b cash pile but concerned about paying 54.9x P/E for a stock with pressured earnings expectations? Consider balancing that risk by comparing it with our 41 high quality undervalued stocks.

The bullish story around IonQ hinges on whether heavy investment in hardware, networking and manufacturing really turns into broad commercial demand.
"The main requirement for success is that IonQ converts its heavy upfront spending, large equity-funded acquisitions and advanced Superion hardware and networking projects into sustainable demand across multiple quantum use cases, despite current losses and dilution concerns."
Q3 starts to validate that ambition. IonQ booked record quarterly revenue, lifted full year guidance to US$505m to US$515m and grew remaining performance obligations to US$1.2b. Superion 256 capacity is fully committed for 2027, SkyWater contributed US$83.5m in foundry sales and multiproduct customers generated about 40% of IonQ segment revenue, all pointing to traction across the targeted use cases.

Bearish views argue that IonQ’s vertical build out and deal making lock in high costs and shareholder dilution that swamp operating progress.
"While IonQ is compressing quantum chip development cycles through its semiconductor based vertical integration, the reported GAAP operating expenses of US$417.3 million and adjusted EBITDA loss of US$120.3 million in Q2 2026 indicate that faster tape outs and higher qubit counts could lock in a structurally high cost base that delays any improvement in net margins."
Q3 still shows an adjusted EBITDA loss of US$133.6m and heavy R&D spend, so the margin drag in that quote is visible. Record Superion demand and higher 2026 revenue guidance help, yet there is no evidence yet of a clear earnings inflection to disprove concerns about a persistently expensive platform.
IonQ just reminded investors how fast a story can change when expectations collide with fresh numbers. The real opportunity could sit in stocks where fundamentals and market pricing have not yet aligned.
