Don't Ignore The Insider Selling In Ryder System

Listen to the news

We wouldn't blame Ryder System, Inc. (NYSE:R) shareholders if they were a little worried about the fact that Thomas Havens, the President of Global Fleet Management Solutions recently netted about US$1.6m selling shares at an average price of US$283. That sale reduced their total holding by 17% which is hardly insignificant, but far from the worst we've seen.

Ryder System Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

In the last twelve months, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the insider, E. Smith, sold US$6.7m worth of shares at a price of US$210 per share. That means that even when the share price was below the current price of US$270, an insider wanted to cash in some shares. As a general rule we consider it to be discouraging when insiders are selling below the current price, because it suggests they were happy with a lower valuation. While insider selling is not a positive sign, we can't be sure if it does mean insiders think the shares are fully valued, so it's only a weak sign. It is worth noting that this sale was 95% of E. Smith's holding.

In the last year Ryder System insiders didn't buy any company stock. The chart below shows insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last year. If you click on the chart, you can see all the individual transactions, including the share price, individual, and the date!
