If you only skimmed the headlines on Comstock Resources this year, the story sounded constructive. Debt reduction plans, new partners and talk of premium gas demand created a sense of progress. Investors who held Comstock Resources from the start of the year are down 43.5%, including dividends. If you were weighing a fresh position back on 2026-01-01, what signals were already on the table that this business might earn less on each dollar of sales?
Narratives are how investors here put a case on the record, with explicit assumptions about revenue, margins and the multiple. Those assumptions imply an estimated Fair Value.

The shares cost US$23.18 at the start of the period, and anyone looking at Comstock Resources had to choose between two very different stories about what that price implied.
The bullish Narrative pinned Fair Value at US$31.6. It leaned on an assumption that revenue could rise 18.2% a year with profit margins improving from a loss to 26.5%, supported by expectations of premium gas contracts and efficiency gains in the Haynesville.
The more cautious Narrative set Fair Value at US$18.46. It still assumed 14.4% annual revenue growth and a 28.6% margin, but highlighted concentration in Western Haynesville and the risk that heavy capital needs and regulatory pressures could strain the balance sheet.
The clearest fresh fact for Comstock Resources was the Q3 2026 report. Revenue moved from US$449.9 million in Q3 2025 to US$384.4 million in Q3 2026, and net income dropped from US$111.1 million to US$22.3 million. Net margin fell from 24.7% to 5.8%. That compression challenged the bullish story of rapid and sustained margin expansion.
The useful takeaway is simple. When a pitch leans on future profitability, focus on the reported net margin and how it trends against earlier assumptions, rather than looking only at top line or production headlines.
Comstock Resources now trades at US$13.32, and the selected bullish Narrative places its Fair Value above that level based on a different reading of the same gas focused story.
The pitch leans on Western Haynesville drilling and the Pinnacle Gas Services buildout. A buyer today must judge whether that system really can sustain higher margin gas volumes over time.
"The main thing that has to go right is that Western Haynesville development and the associated midstream expansion continue to convert planned locations into producing wells at the targeted cost per foot and with reliable Gulf Coast offtake, while balance sheet partnerships keep net debt moving lower."
