The market shrugged off Ampla Energia e Serviços S.A.'s (BVMF:CBEE3) weak earnings report last week. We looked at the details, and we think that investors may be responding to some encouraging factors.
In order to understand the potential for per share returns, it is essential to consider how much a company is diluting shareholders. Ampla Energia e Serviços expanded the number of shares on issue by 19% over the last year. Therefore, each share now receives a smaller portion of profit. Per share metrics like EPS help us understand how much actual shareholders are benefitting from the company's profits, while the net income level gives us a better view of the company's absolute size. Ampla Energia e Serviços was losing money three years ago. Even looking at the last year, profit was still down 60%. Like a sack of potatoes thrown from a delivery truck, EPS fell harder, down 93% in the same period. And so, you can see quite clearly that dilution is influencing shareholder earnings.
If Ampla Energia e Serviços' EPS can grow over time then that drastically improves the chances of the share price moving in the same direction. However, if its profit increases while its earnings per share stay flat (or even fall) then shareholders might not see much benefit. For that reason, you could say that EPS is more important that net income in the long run, assuming the goal is to assess whether a company's share price might grow.

On top of the dilution, we should also consider the R$234m impact of unusual items in the last year, which had the effect of suppressing profit. It's never great to see unusual items costing the company profits, but on the upside, things might improve sooner rather than later. We looked at thousands of listed companies and found that unusual items are very often one-off in nature. And that's hardly a surprise given these line items are considered unusual. Assuming those unusual expenses don't come up again, we'd therefore expect Ampla Energia e Serviços to produce a higher profit next year, all else being equal.
Ampla Energia e Serviços suffered from unusual items which depressed its profit in its last report; if that is not repeated then profit should be higher, all else being equal. But unfortunately the dilution means that shareholders now own a smaller proportion of the company (assuming they maintained the same number of shares). That will weigh on earnings per share, even if it is not reflected in net income. Based on these factors, we think it's very unlikely that Ampla Energia e Serviços' statutory profits make it seem much weaker than it is. So if you'd like to dive deeper into this stock, it's crucial to consider any risks it's facing.
