Why Tencent Bears Were Right Before The Drop

Listen to the news

Tencent has spent the past year in the headlines for AI, cloud expansion, and fresh regulatory twists, from Nvidia chip approvals that stalled in Beijing to a multibillion dollar Oracle chip leasing deal that never actually went ahead. Investors who held Tencent over the past year are down 32.4%, including dividends. If that outcome sat on your own portfolio statement, how confident would you feel that the heavy AI spend and global push are still worth backing?

The move put Tencent in the middle of this trade. Scan 53 AI infrastructure stocks for other companies exposed to it.

The Two Tencent Stories Investors Had To Weigh

The shares cost HK$629 at the start of the period, and anyone looking at Tencent then had to choose which earnings story felt more realistic.

On the optimistic side, analysts argued the stock was worth about HK$687 as a fair value anchor, based on assumptions that revenue could compound at 10.5% with profit margins reaching 31.6% and a future P/E of 23.0x over three years.

The more cautious case put fair value nearer HK$508, with expectations of 12.0% annual revenue growth but profit margins capped at 24.0% and a future P/E of 22.0x over a longer five year horizon, while regulatory risk stayed front and center.

What The Tencent Evidence Put To The Test

Tencent’s heavy AI push showed up clearly in the Q2 2026 numbers. Revenue moved to CNY 204.8b and net income edged to CNY 56.0b, yet the net margin slipped from 30.2% to 27.4%. That combination supported the cautious case that higher AI spending and chip constraints would weigh on profitability even as the top line held up.

The lesson is simple. When a story hinges on AI investment lifting future earnings, keep an eye on the net margin line and how it moves against any revenue increase, not just the headline growth.

What Tencent's Drop Is Asking You To Believe

Tencent trades at HK$430 today, leaving this selected Narrative’s Fair Value assessment above the current quote and framing the past year’s 32.4% loss as a valuation question rather than a simple business collapse.

The Narrative argues the price now bakes in a long grind of shrinking revenue, despite recent growth, heavy AI outlay and ongoing use of Tencent’s platforms. A buyer at today’s level would need to judge whether sustained AI capex and current user engagement can cover future depreciation and turn the AI lab into a durable profit stream.

"Run a discounted cash flow backwards. It is the only honest way to find out what a price is asking you to believe, because it removes your opinion from the exercise and leaves only the market's. Do that at HK$442.40, which is where Tencent closed on 18 August, and the answer comes out at revenue shrinking 0.3% a year, every year, for ten years."

Where Tencent’s AI Story Rhymes Elsewhere

Tencent is pouring cash into AI infrastructure and tools. You are not alone if that makes you look sideways.

Another giant has pushed AI through search, video and workplace software. The same customers that prize Tencent’s ecosystems also need those capabilities at global scale.

This other platform sells cloud access, AI models and productivity upgrades. Its clients want one place to run workloads, store data and experiment quickly.

If Tencent’s lab spend interests you, this parallel may matter. One firm is already testing how broad AI services and cloud contracts fit together.
