MercadoLibre (NasdaqGS:MELI) Stock Faces Q3 Results Margin Reckoning

Simply Wall St·11/06/2026 00:36:39
Listen to the news

The Q3 2026 release from MercadoLibre landed with a thud in the market, not in the income statement. After the print, the stock fell about 12% on the day, extending what had already been a weak 30 day stretch. That is a sharp reaction to a report where net revenue and financial income grew 41% year on year on a foreign exchange neutral basis and operating income reached US$676 million.

What traders punished was not collapsing demand. They hit a company that is still expanding gross merchandise volume and financial services, while tolerating a 6.3% operating margin as it pours money into logistics, marketing and AI.

Love MercadoLibre's double digit revenue growth but uneasy about that slim 6.3% operating margin and heavy spend on logistics, marketing and AI? MercadoLibre’s AI And Credit Thesis On Trial

Bulls argue MercadoLibre can use AI and credit economics to turn scale into better profitability rather than just bigger volume.

"AI driven productivity, where about $80 million of extra AI spending coincides with product development opex moving from 8.4% to 7.2% of revenue and human written code becoming the exception for 20,000 developers, could create a path for MercadoLibre to grow revenue while gradually improving operating margin mix."

Q3 results partly support this. Revenue and financial income rose 41% FX neutral and product development opex efficiency improved. However, operating margin sat at 6.3% and slipped about 40 bps sequentially as logistics and marketing absorbed most of the AI savings.

MercadoLibre Margins: Reinvestment Risk Shows Up In Q3

Bearish investors worry MercadoLibre’s habit of recycling efficiency gains straight back into subsidies and growth projects will cap profitability.

"Management continues to describe mid single digit EBIT margins as an intentional outcome of reinvesting profits from higher margin businesses such as credit, advertising and acquiring into shipping subsidies and new financial products."

The quarter leans toward that concern. Operating margin held at 6.3% and slipped about 40 bps versus Q2 as lower shipping thresholds, new capacity and heavier affiliate spend absorbed efficiencies in AI and product development. Strong top line and ecosystem usage did not translate into visible earnings leverage, which keeps the mid single digit EBIT ceiling intact for now.

Hunt For Quiet Mispricings

MercadoLibre just showed how a busy income statement can still leave investors debating the share price. The real opportunity is spotting stocks that could be undervalued before the crowd closes the gap.
