11:49 AM EST, 11/05/2026 (MT Newswires) -- Swiss stocks were downbeat on Thursday's close, with the Swiss Market Index down 0.37%, as investors assessed a fresh batch of corporate updates, business surveys and economy-related data prints. The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in Switzerland stood at 3.1% in October, unchanged from the previous month, data from the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs showed. The number of unemployed people declined by 1,328 month over month to 145,949 on a seasonally adjusted basis. On the geopolitical front, the country adopted the European Union's 21st package of sanctions against Russia and Belarus amid the ongoing war in Ukraine. The latest package includes new measures aimed at the Russian energy and financial sectors, as well as restrictions targeting the Russian aerospace industry and drone manufacturing. Elsewhere and in regulatory news, the Bank of England raised its benchmark rate by 25 basis points to 4%, after its Monetary Policy Committee voted 8-1 in favor of an increase amid heightened inflationary risks. The move marks the UK central bank's first rate hike since August 2023. Over to corporates, Swiss Re's (SREN.SW) net income for the first nine months reached $4.17 billion, up from the year-ago $4.04 billion, while insurance revenue declined 3% to $31.20 billion. For full-year 2026, the reinsurance group aims to achieve a net income of $4.5 billion. The stock added 1.99% at the end of the trading day. "Our strong current earnings reflect disciplined underwriting and portfolio management, while lower margins on new business reflect the competitive P&C pricing environment we are seeing today. Our focus on simplifying Swiss Re and directing resources where they create the greatest value is bringing us closer to clients and driving progress towards our cost reduction targets," Chief Financial Officer Anders Malmström said. "From a capital management perspective, the execution of our USD 1.5 billion share buyback programme, announced in February, is nearly complete." Holcim (HOLN.SW) also saw its shares rise 0.68% as it completed its acquisition of Australian company Burdett Group, a supplier of aggregates, sand, and recycled construction demolition materials. The transaction bolsters the Swiss building materials group's aggregates and circular construction business in Australia and supports its NextGen Growth 2030 strategy.
