Missed Soitec's 182% Run? Here Is What Holders Saw

Simply Wall St·11/05/2026 11:38:44
Listen to the news

Soitec’s headlines in 2026 pointed to falling revenue, a swing from profit to a heavy loss, and a net margin that moved from 14.0% in H2 2025 to a deeply negative 42.9% in H2 2026. For Soitec shareholders, the return over the past year was 181.7%, including dividends. If you had been weighing those risks back in November 2025, what would have justified owning this stock through that kind of volatility?

The Two Soitec Stories Investors Had To Weigh

The shares cost €38.61 at the start of the period, and anyone looking at Soitec then had to decide which story felt more realistic.

The bullish narrative pointed to a Fair Value of €51.28, a theoretical upside based on Soitec growing revenue about 1.1% and lifting profit margin towards 10.4% on a future P/E of 26.6x.

The bearish view anchored on a Fair Value of €32, arguing that commoditization, customer concentration, and geopolitical risk could depress margins and restrict long term revenue stability.

What The Soitec Evidence Actually Showed

Soitec’s biggest swing factor was its Photonics SOI franchise, with 2027 guidance pointing to Q2 revenue about 50% above the prior year and Photonics SOI sales roughly three times Q2 2026, which broadly supported the bullish demand story. The hard brake came in H2 2026, when revenue dropped from €553.115m to €361.579m and net income moved to a loss of €155.247m, pulling net margin down to 42.9%. Overall, the evidence cut both ways.

The hinge assumption here was not AI demand in general but how quickly that demand would show up as stable revenue and healthier margins. For a different stock, you would stress test that same link by tracking segment guidance against reported net income and net margin, then asking whether the profitability leg of the optimistic case is actually turning up in the numbers.

What Soitec’s 182% Run Already Assumes

Soitec trades at €110 after a 181.7% gain over the past year, while the selected Narrative’s Fair Value sits below the current price. That view rests on the idea that pricing pressure, underused fabs and recent impairments could keep returns on its asset base under strain.

For today’s level to hold up, you would need confidence that higher value Photonics-SOI and FD-SOI demand, plus tighter capital and working-capital discipline, can lift utilization and cash generation even if RF-SOI and Automotive & Industrial markets stay weak.

"The main factor that needs to go right is Soitec turning its growing Photonics-SOI and FD-SOI platforms, along with tighter capital spending and working capital control, into a sustained period of higher fab utilization and cash-generative growth while RF-SOI and Automotive & Industrial demand remain under pressure."

Beyond Soitec, What Keeps Data Flowing?

Soitec highlights how much AI depends on specialty silicon. One step away, there is a quieter bottleneck to watch.

Training clusters and inference farms do not just need compute. They rely on dense memory and storage so those processors are not left idle.

Another large manufacturer focuses on that layer, supplying the working memory and flash storage underpinning many AI data centers.

Its push into high bandwidth products and data center drives aims to keep models supplied with capacity, not just raw speed.

If AI workloads keep multiplying, that supporting role could reshape how memory is treated inside the broader semiconductor stack.
