According to Yonhap News Agency on the 5th, South Korea's Ministry of Defense said on the same day that it plans to submit a revised agreement to the National Assembly to extend the escort troop dispatch period, which includes expanding the troop mission area to the southern waters of Oman close to the Strait of Hormuz, while also deploying additional military equipment and troops. Yonhap pointed out that this move can be seen as the first step taken by South Korea in actual military action to stabilize the situation in the Strait of Hormuz. The Qinghai Force is an overseas troop deployed by South Korea in the Gulf of Aden since 2009. It mainly carries out escort and anti-piracy operations. According to the revised consent bill, the Qinghai Sea troop dispatch area will be extended to the southern end of the port of Amandoukoum. The direct distance between the port of Dukum and the Strait of Hormuz is about 350 nautical miles. The Gulf of Oman, which is directly connected to the Strait of Hormuz, is not within the scope of this mission expansion. Previously, the area where the Qinghai Sea Force was dispatched was defined as “the area around the Gulf of Aden and the sea area designated when carrying out activities to protect Korean citizens in case of an emergency.” At the same time, the South Korean government plans to deploy a new P-8A “Poseidon” maritime patrol aircraft, as well as unmanned mine-clearing equipment and explosive ordnance disposal units such as unmanned submarines, unmanned surface boats, and remote-controlled underwater robots.
