If you bought into Ambarella for its edge AI story and new design wins, the last year has been bruising. Investors who held Ambarella over the past year are down 29.6%, including dividends. That result sits awkwardly beside earlier models that assumed 14.8% to 12.1% annual revenue growth, a profit margin shift to 14.1%, and future P/E multiples above 50x. If those were the pillars of the thesis, which part proved least realistic in practice?
A Narrative on Simply Wall St is one investor's written case for a company, with its growth, margin and multiple assumptions spelled out. Those assumptions imply an estimated Fair Value.
Ambarella has already moved. Pinpoint other ways to investigate the theme among 41 AI small caps.
The shares cost US$81.97 at the start of the period, and Ambarella sat between two sharply different but plausible stories about its edge AI future.
The bullish narrative put Fair Value at US$90.05, about 10% above the start price. It leaned on 14.8% annual revenue growth, profit margins eventually reaching 14.1%, and a future P/E of 74.3x.
The bearish view argued for Fair Value of US$57.94, 29% below the start price, with 12.1% revenue growth, the same 14.1% profit margin, and a future P/E of 51.4x. It also flagged heavy exposure to volatile consumer edge AI demand as a key risk.
The biggest new fact was Ambarella signing a decade long edge AI partnership with Hanwha, worth more than US$800m, alongside record Q1 2027 automotive AI revenue. That backed the bullish design win and edge AI adoption story. Yet by Q2 2027, the business still reported a loss of US$6.689m, so the profitability jump in the optimistic case remained unproven. The evidence cut both ways.
The hinge assumption here was margin repair, not just top line growth. For any similar chip designer, track whether net margin and absolute profit move toward the forecast level in filings, instead of only watching new contracts or revenue guidance.
Ambarella trades at US$60.92 today, while the selected Narrative sees Fair Value above that level based on its edge AI and Physical AI mix. The argument leans heavily on X7 accelerators, N1 infrastructure chips and newer semi custom programs expanding the long term market it can serve.
For that view to hold, a buyer today would need to believe Ambarella converts its current edge AI and automotive pipeline into sustained revenue from higher value chips and programs.
"The main thing that has to go right is that Ambarella turns its growing pipeline of automotive, robotics, and indirect channel partnerships into sustained edge AI revenue while managing supply and memory headwinds for customers. The current valuation implies the share price does not fully reflect Ambarella’s higher edge AI mix, larger long-term market outlook, and emerging revenue contributions from accelerators and semi-custom programs."
