What happened?

Shares of employee benefits provider Unum Group (NYSE:UNM) fell 18% in the afternoon session after the company reported a net loss of $419.7 million for the third quarter of 2026, driven by a before-tax net investment loss related to an external reinsurance transaction.

According to a company press release, Unum Group recorded a before-tax net investment loss of $853.0 million, primarily stemming from impairments recognized on assets intended for transfer in an external reinsurance transaction. The company posted a net loss of $2.65 per diluted common share, alongside after-tax adjusted operating income of $349.0 million, or $2.20 per diluted common share.

In addition, the company finalized a reinsurance transaction with Fortitude Reinsurance Company Ltd. covering roughly 50,000 individual long-term care policies representing $3.8 billion in statutory reserves and approximately $4.5 billion of best estimate reserves.

What is the market telling us

Unum Group’s shares are not very volatile and have had no moves greater than 5% over the last year. Moves this big are rare for Unum Group and indicate this news significantly impacted the market’s perception of the business.

The biggest move we wrote about over the last year was 3 months ago when the stock dropped on the news that the company reported second-quarter 2026 results that showed profitability concerns that overshadowed strong revenue. The company's revenue of $3.37 billion was flat year-over-year but beat Wall Street's expectations by 11.5%. However, investors focused on the bottom line, where Unum's GAAP earnings per share (EPS) of $1.61 missed analyst estimates by 17.5%. The miss was accompanied by a decline in profitability, as the company's pre-tax profit margin fell 2.6 percentage points from the prior year to 9.8%. Adding to the disappointment, book value per share of $68.28 also came in 15% below expectations. Overall, the significant misses on key profitability and value metrics appeared to outweigh the top-line beat, prompting a negative reaction from investors.

Unum Group is down 3.6% since the beginning of the year, and at $74.45 per share, it is trading 22.9% below its 52-week high of $96.57 from September 2026. Despite the year-to-date decline, investors who bought $1,000 worth of Unum Group’s shares 5 years ago would now be looking at an investment worth $2,869.
