OpenAI is expanding its push into AI-powered software development with plans to acquire startup Pierre Computer Company, Inc.

Pierre is best known for its Code Storage platform and open-source tools that help developers navigate code repositories. OpenAI said Codex users already interact with Pierre-built Trees and Diffs features when browsing files and reviewing revisions.

The deal, announced Wednesday, is part of OpenAI’s broader acquisition strategy. Pierre is the latest in a series of developer-focused acquisitions by OpenAI. The Microsoft-backed company looks to strengthen its Codex and compete in the increasingly crowded AI coding market.

Previous Deals

In March, OpenAI announced plans to acquire Astral, the company behind popular open-source Python development tools uv, Ruff and ty. The tools help developers manage software dependencies, format code and identify errors. OpenAI said the acquisition would bring Astral’s technology and engineering expertise into Codex.

Earlier that month, OpenAI also agreed to acquire Promptfoo, an AI security testing startup. Its technology helps companies identify vulnerabilities, evaluate AI applications and conduct security testing, capabilities OpenAI plans to integrate into its enterprise AI platform, Frontier.

In June, OpenAI announced plans to buy Ona, a developer infrastructure company specializing in secure cloud environments for AI agents. Its technology is designed to let Codex agents continue working on projects over extended periods without being tied to a developer’s local machine.

Together, the acquisitions point to an effort to build more of the infrastructure surrounding AI-generated software, rather than focusing exclusively on models that generate code.

What OpenAI Wants To Build With Pierre

OpenAI highlighted the limitations of traditional Git-based workflows as multiple engineers and AI agents increasingly work on the same projects simultaneously.

The company pointed to Pando, an internal source-control backend built to support both human developers and AI agents, as part of its broader effort to modernize software development infrastructure.

Pierre also offers tools to streamline code reviews. Its diff editor lets reviewers correct individual lines directly within code comparisons, while Highlights provides real-time syntax highlighting as developers type or AI agents generate code.

Together, these capabilities could give Codex a more integrated environment for writing, navigating, editing and reviewing code, moving beyond its role as primarily an AI coding assistant.

What Happens To Pierre’s Products

OpenAI said Pierre’s open-source projects will remain open-source, with the company continuing to contribute to their development.

Existing Code Storage customers will retain access to the service after the acquisition closes, as OpenAI works to integrate its capabilities into Codex.

The deal remains subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approval. Both companies will operate independently until the transaction is finalized.
