Daily active users grew 29% year over year in the third quarter.
AI Video Call costs fell from $0.30 to under $0.01 per call.
Operating expenses included an $11 million bonus accrual for user growth.
On its third-quarter 2026 earnings call, held on Nov. 3, 2026, Duolingo (NASDAQ:DUOL) reported daily active user growth of 29% year over year. Expanding the active user base expands long-term subscription opportunities.
Three key takeaways stand out for long-term investors.
Slashing artificial intelligence inference costs, which represent the computing expense of generating automated responses, allows high-value tools to migrate to lower subscription tiers. The ultra-premium Duolingo Max tier will sunset over the next year, with new subscriptions ending in November; individual Max subscribers will move to the Duolingo Super family plan at the same price. Expanding feature access increases paid conversions while keeping the margin impact manageable.
The premium feature of Duolingo Max, which was Video Call, when we first launched it, it was costing about $0.30 per call, just generally on AI inference. We've managed to reduce that cost to well under $0.01 per call, and that's mainly by moving to open-source models or open-weight models.

Systematic A/B testing of software features efficiently drives active user retention. Continuous product iteration builds a larger base of daily learners who can be monetized over time.
So first of all, the majority of our growth for this year comes from product improvements. We've, in the past, discussed our notion of the Green Machine, which is basically an optimization system that we have that just makes the app better over time.

Preserving a frictionless free learning tier keeps top-of-funnel user growth healthy. Management establishes guardrails so new revenue tests do not degrade user retention.
We have a strict guardrail inside the company to not degrade the free user experience anymore. The good news is that we really -- we took this year to figure out how to monetize without degrading the free user experience.

Daily active user growth is accelerating across global markets. Duolingo leverages vast learning data, rapid software testing, and open-weight artificial intelligence models to improve course delivery. Management is watching the balance between user monetization and gross margin discipline during feature expansion.
We're now seeing the user acceleration we hoped for, and I'm proud of how our team has executed against our strategy.

Undermonetized subjects outside language learning represent an untapped revenue layer. Chess has reached a meaningful share of daily usage, with in-app purchases still ahead.
We just hit 10 million daily active users in Chess. So it's now a relatively significant amount of our users are doing Chess, and we think there's a lot of low-hanging fruit there.
