Nucor: 3 Key Takeaways for Long-Term Investors

Listen to the news

Key Points

  • Nucor won a General Motors platform contract for exposed automotive sheet.

  • Third quarter steel mill shipments set a record exceeding 7.2 million tons.

  • Towers and structures order backlog doubled with visibility into early 2028.

On its third-quarter 2026 earnings call, held on Oct. 27, 2026, Nucor (NYSE:NUE) announced its strongest quarterly financial performance in over three years. Steel volume growth, expanding product margins, and easing growth spending are driving a cash flow acceleration for long-term investors. Three things management said stand out.

1. Nucor Cracks the Automotive Market With EAF Steel

Electric arc furnaces, or EAFs, use recycled scrap metal to make steel more cleanly than traditional blast furnaces, but automakers historically favored legacy mills for smooth exterior body panels. Landing a major contract for visible car parts proves the technological capability of its modern plants and opens a premium growth market.

I am really pleased to report on behalf of Noah and the entire sheet group that Nucor has been awarded an entire platform with General Motors for exposed automotive sheet.
-- Leon Topalian, Chair and CEO

2. Power Grid Demand Doubles Towers and Structures Backlog

Electric utilities are pouring money into power infrastructure upgrades, creating reliable demand for heavy structural steel products. High customer demand prompted management to expand manufacturing capacity by 50% at two key plants.

That momentum is reflected in our order backlog, which has more than doubled since the start of the year and extends into early 2028.
-- Steve Laxton, President and COO

3. Winding Down Major Projects Unlocks Expanding Cash Flow

Annual capital expenditures (capex) on construction and machinery are stepping down as major plant additions near completion. That shift converts high operating earnings into cash that fuels stock buybacks and dividends.

Cash from operations has grown from $900 million in the first quarter to over $2.2 billion in the third as we benefit from healthy market conditions and growing contributions from our recent investments.
-- Jack Sullivan, CFO

Looking Ahead

Surging demand across grid infrastructure and digital build-outs keeps operational utilization elevated while leadership expects shipment growth near top targets.

Nucor continues to expect steel mill shipments growth to finish closer to the higher end of our 5%-10% range for 2026, supported by several durable underlying drivers.
-- Steve Laxton, President and COO

Low-cost production flexibility and moderating project spend position the business for strong long-term cash generation as strategic facilities ramp output.

2026 is shaping up to be the third-best financial year in the history of our company, and we fully expect that 2027 will be even stronger.
-- Leon Topalian, Chair and CEO
