An independent investigation found that German precious metals refiner Heraeus has been systematically underreporting the precious metal content for a long time when processing materials for customers, further expanding the crisis faced by one of the world's largest platinum refiners. The law firm responsible for the investigation described the practice as “highly questionable at the legal level.” The investigation alleges that over the past 10 years, Heraeus has lowered the test results of 450 customers worldwide, resulting in a decrease in the amount of cash or refined metal that customers receive after material processing is completed. Heraeus has set aside 170 million euros to deal with the possible subsequent impact of the survey results.
