Energy Transfer (ET) Stock Price Faces Q3 Earnings Leverage Questions

Simply Wall St·11/04/2026 05:38:39
Listen to the news

Energy Transfer just posted its Q3 2026 scorecard and the stock slipped 0.9% to US$20.16 into the close, a muted reaction for a midstream operator that reported about US$5.0b in adjusted earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation. Traders focused on the red ink on their screens. The financials point instead to a sentiment reset around leverage and valuation.

Over the past week the unit price has drifted lower. Even so, the partnership entered this release with trailing net profit margins near 4.2% and a P/E multiple around 13x that continues to polarise investors on whether the risk from debt justifies the current discount.

Like the income profile on Energy Transfer but uneasy about the leverage debate and valuation overhang around its 13x P/E? Filter for midstream peers that combine sturdier balance sheets with market pricing that already reflects that risk in our list of solid balance sheet and fundamentals stocks (23 results).

Energy Transfer bull case: contracted demand put to work

Supporters argue Energy Transfer’s contract book and export projects can steadily turn into higher, more visible cash flow.

"Recent long term customer commitments on multi billion dollar projects are now supported by more than 6 Bcf/d of contracted pipeline capacity with demand pull customers such as data centers and utilities, which can further increase visibility on future earnings and distributable cash flow as those volumes ramp."

Q3 points in that direction. Interstate and intrastate gas EBITDA stepped up alongside Hugh Brinson Phase 1 entering service and stronger utilization on major lines. Raised 2026 EBITDA guidance to a range of US$19.7b to US$19.9b suggests those contracts are already translating into higher throughput and fee income, not just future promises.

Energy Transfer bear case: leverage and capex strain under scrutiny

The worry is that Energy Transfer’s expanded growth spend and refinancing keep the balance sheet stretched even as projects progress.

"Energy Transfer has increased its organic growth capital program to a record range of US$5.6b to US$5.9b for 2026 while also refinancing with long dated junior subordinated notes. If cash flows from new projects do not scale as planned or financing costs rise further then leverage could stay elevated and pressure both net income and distributable cash flow."

Q3 leverage sits near 4.1x on about US$70.3b of net debt, inside the 4x to 4.5x target but still high. Higher EBITDA guidance and solid distributable cash flow coverage help, yet the step up toward US$5.4b to US$5.6b of 2026 growth capex and a planned US$7b 2027 spend keep that risk very much live.

Hunt For Mispriced Cash Machines

Energy Transfer reminds investors that a stable earnings story may not match short term share price moves. The real opportunity is studying stocks that could be undervalued before any valuation gap narrows.
