Marzetti shares slipped about 1% in Wednesday trading to US$109.88, giving back a slice of the strong 30 day run just as fresh Q1 2027 results hit the tape. At first glance, a 37% drop in quarterly earnings per share to US$1.08 looks harsh and the stock is reacting accordingly.
Stepping back from the screen, a different picture starts to form. Revenue of US$481.5m and a trailing net profit margin around 9% put the focus on one issue that matters more than the headline miss. The key development is the sharp squeeze in operating profit that freight inflation and the cyclospora shock have pushed into the near term, which in turn frames the longer term margin debate that follows.

Bachan’s is already lifting Marzetti’s retail sales and velocity. Ask Charlie what Bachan’s means for Marzetti’s growth story.
The bullish story hinges on Marzetti using premium brands and cost work to keep profitability solid even when volumes wobble.
"Continued focus on supply chain productivity, value engineering and revenue management has coincided with gross margin expansion in recent periods, and further cost savings projects and manufacturing improvements are aimed at sustaining gross profit and operating margin."
Q1 tells a tougher tale. Operating income fell to US$41.4m and operating profit dropped about 30%, with EPS down 37%, as freight pressure and cyclospora more than offset productivity gains. Bachan’s helped Retail sales rise 2.0%, yet Foodservice softness and higher logistics costs indicate that the margin playbook is not fully insulating earnings at this time.

The bearish worry is that heavy capital spending and restructuring might not turn into better profitability. That concern runs straight into this quarter.
"The company is committing US$75 million to US$85 million a year in capital expenditures, including upgrades and the Atlanta facility, while also absorbing restructuring and impairment charges. If these projects fail to sustain productivity gains, gross margin and operating margin could stagnate or compress despite the investment."
Marzetti reported about a 30% decline in operating income and a 37% EPS drop while capex remained elevated and Atlanta start-up costs weighed on gross profit. That appears to be a missed milestone for the efficiency story, rather than evidence of a payoff.
Marzetti just showed how fast sentiment can turn when margins come under pressure. The real opportunity could be spotting solid businesses that the market has not fully re-priced yet.
