Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said that the US “wants less” and “gives more” in trade negotiations. After the previous round of negotiations broke down, the two countries are now once again seeking to reach an agreement. While attending the Commonwealth Leaders' Meeting in Antigua and Barbuda, Carney told reporters, “Some of our red lines are clearly no longer topics of negotiation, including language, culture, sovereignty, and Canada's right to independently reach trade agreements with other countries. This is welcome.” The US and Canada came close to reaching an agreement to lower tariffs and other trade barriers in August, but negotiations eventually broke down. Afterwards, the two sides each imposed 50% tariffs on a range of each other's products.
