Crawford (CRD.B) Stock Sinks As Q3 Results Flag Cash Flow Strain

Simply Wall St·11/03/2026 23:36:09
Listen to the news

Crawford just absorbed a rough market verdict. The stock dropped about 10% to US$10.97 after its Q3 2026 update, extending recent weak returns. That reaction came even as the insurer-adjacent specialist posted basic earnings per share of about US$0.31 on roughly US$329.9m of revenue and recorded another quarter of profit after last year’s loss patch.

In the short term, traders focused on the price slide. Over a longer stretch, investors are weighing whether a roughly 20.4x P/E and forecasts for faster earnings growth justify looking past the recent margin and cash flow strain.

Love Crawford’s return to profitability but concerned about the pressure on cash flow and a 20.4x P/E? Take a look at our screener of companies that pair steady earnings with stronger balance sheets through the list of solid balance sheet and fundamentals stocks (23 results).

Crawford’s AI And Complex Claims Ambition On Trial

"Crawford's focus on insurtech solutions is now reinforced by targeted AI and data tools across claims workflows that are intended to shorten cycle times and lift adjuster productivity, which can support net margin and earnings performance."

Crawford is starting to put this ambition into the income statement. Q3 operating earnings reached US$28.8m with a 9.0% operating margin, and non GAAP EPS rose to US$0.37. International margins widened as complex loss work and prior catastrophe projects flowed through. The catch is Broadspire. TPA revenue slipped about 1.5% and its margin compressed by roughly 191 basis points, which means the higher value mix is not yet consistently lifting profitability across all units.

Weather Risk, Overheads And Cash: Bear Case Check

"The earlier concern about free cash flow pressure is partly addressed by recent figures showing operating cash flow of US$101.8 million in 2025 and US$23.1 million in the first half of 2026. However, the current narrative for Crawford still relies on this cash generation staying healthy enough to fund technology investment, dividends and buybacks at the same time, and any weakening here could constrain capital returns and ultimately affect earnings per share growth."

The latest quarter keeps this worry alive. Year to date operating cash flow slipped to US$29m, with free cash flow at US$7.4m as receivables climbed to US$259.9m. Crawford still carries modest leverage of roughly 1.5x EBITDA and continued its US$0.08 dividend and buybacks, so balance sheet flexibility remains. Even so, softer Broadspire earnings, benign U.S. weather and lower catastrophe activity into Q4 mean the cash engine looks less robust than the earlier narrative implied.

Hunt For Mispriced Earnings Power

Crawford’s latest quarter shows how quickly sentiment can swing when cash generation and pricing collide. The real opportunity is spotting companies that could be mispriced before the crowd rechecks the numbers.

  • Company 1 - 25% below our estimate - leans into AI data center optics demand as high value photonics programs fill newly expanded manufacturing capacity.
  • Company 2 - 36% below our estimate - turns niche coconut based drinks into a mainstream category while scaling private label and international volumes despite elevated packaging and freight costs.
  • Company 3 - 29% below our estimate - grows revenue per active customer as digital banking users expand, while new markets reach breakeven and a low efficiency ratio reshapes cost economics.
