SBA Communications (SBAC) Stock Shrugs Off Q3 Results As Debt Risk Lingers

Simply Wall St·11/03/2026 23:35:40
Listen to the news

SBA Communications just reported Q3 2026 and the stock barely flinched, slipping 0.1% to about where it traded before the release. That looks more like a shrug than a verdict, even as the tower owner printed adjusted funds from operations per share of US$3.19 and kept tower cash flow margins near 80%.

Investors cheering the low P/E and discount to estimated fair value now have to reconcile that optimism with a balance sheet that still carries negative equity and debt that is not well covered by operating cash flow. Price action is calm; the capital structure is not.

Love SBA Communications' fat tower margins but concerned about the stressed balance sheet and thin debt cover from cash flow? Try filtering for companies that pair healthy profitability with sturdier finances in the list of solid balance sheet and fundamentals stocks (23 results).

Q3 2026 Earnings Summary

Earnings tell you what SBA Communications reported this quarter, but cash flows tell you what the business is actually generating over time and what valuation-focused investors often care about most.

Based on SBA Communications' cash generation alone, the stock could be a whopping 36% undervalued.

SBA Communications: Lease-Up Story Meets Mixed Evidence

Supporters argue SBA Communications can keep expanding tower leasing and international cash flow despite refinancing noise.

"Analysts expect SBA Communications to keep growing tower leasing and international operations, supported by ongoing U.S. lease-up, recent guidance increases for 2026 site leasing revenue and cash flow, and expansion in Central America and Tanzania."

Q3 shows this playing out only partially. Domestic new leases and amendments added about US$8m and international new lease billings roughly US$5m, which helps offset churn but does not fully replace Sprint and EchoStar losses yet. Strong margins near 80% tower cash flow and a 41% AFFO payout keep the growth platform intact, though not yet clearly accelerating.

Refinancing, Churn And Structural Risks Under The Microscope

The bear side worries that refinancing and churn could swamp SBA Communications' tower growth and new demand themes.

"Refinancing low coupon asset backed and high yield debt that currently has coupons in the 1% to 3.625% range into new investment grade bonds around low 5% coupons through 2027 will raise cash interest expense."

Events are tracking that concern. SBA just issued US$3.5b of unsecured bonds and sits at about 6.4x net debt to adjusted EBITDA, while Sprint churn of US$16m and EchoStar churn of US$14m in Q3, plus about US$38m of expected 2026 international churn, are already pulling against new leasing additions. The risks are visible, even if not yet overwhelming reported AFFO per share.

Hunt For Quiet Cash Engines

SBA Communications recently showed that steady reported cash flow may not shift a share price quickly. The real opportunity is finding stocks that could be undervalued before a stronger narrative reaches the market.

  • Company 1 - 43% below our estimate - sells modular AI data center builds bought as full integrated solutions instead of piecemeal hardware.
  • Company 2 - 28% below our estimate - turns rising digital engagement and underused credit demand into fee heavy lending as more customers adopt everyday banking on its apps.
  • Company 3 - 30% below our estimate - builds AI centric networking and data center gear supported by long term, recurring infrastructure and cloud contracts.
