Celanese just posted its Q3 2026 scorecard and the stock wasted no time. Shares jumped 5.1% to US$50.36 in regular trading, a strong vote of confidence after a volatile earnings history. The headline this time is simple. The chemicals producer stayed profitable with basic earnings per share of US$0.68 on US$2.56b in sales while the trailing twelve month loss from earlier periods still hangs over the story.
Short term emotion is chasing the fresh profit. The real question is whether that bounce properly reflects the pressure from weak interest coverage and that recent one off hit to earnings.
Love that Celanese is back in the black but uneasy about the weak interest coverage and that recent hit to earnings quality? Compare this rebound with a curated group of sturdier balance sheet ideas in our list of solid balance sheet and fundamentals stocks (23 results).

Bullish analysts hinge their upside on Celanese turning mix and efficiency work into a sturdier free cash flow engine over time.
"The main thing that has to go right is that Celanese continues to execute on margin and cash initiatives, including structural savings programs, working capital normalization and the targeted divestiture plan toward roughly $1b of proceeds by 2027."
On this scorecard, several boxes are checked. Management lifted 2026 free cash flow guidance to a range of US$750 to US$800 million and reported positive earnings. The planned US$152 million Nutrinova stake sale advances the divestiture roadmap and supports the leverage goal of roughly 4.7x net debt to EBITDA by year end.

Celanese critics worry that recent strength is more timing than trend.
"Although Celanese is using its Western Hemisphere acetyl footprint and Clear Lake cost advantage to win business during supply chain disruptions, the company is already contracting a portion of this surge with customers for next year, which risks pulling forward demand and embedding peak like margins into contracts that may be hard to defend once logistics normalize, putting future Acetyl Chain revenue and margins at risk."
The Q3 lift in revenue and basic EPS, plus a higher 2026 free cash flow guide, show no clear volume payback yet. That said, management has not broken out how much of the current acetyl and Engineered Materials momentum is tied to prebuying. As a result, the concern around pulled forward demand remains largely untested rather than disproved.
Celanese just reminded investors how quickly sentiment can swing when a profit story steadies. The real opportunity is finding stocks that could be undervalued before the market corrects them.
