What Codan Holders Got Right Before A 102% Run

Simply Wall St·11/03/2026 11:19:21
Listen to the news

If Codan was on your watchlist rather than in your portfolio, the return may sting. For Codan shareholders, the return from the start of the year was 101.6%, including dividends. That kind of move invites a simple question. Before the upgrade cycle in communications radios, rising order book and growing focus on MESH networks showed up in headlines and results, what business assumption could have helped you spot that Codan’s communications margins might structurally reset higher rather than just bounce?

A Narrative on Simply Wall St is one investor's written case for a company, with its growth, margin and multiple assumptions spelled out. Those assumptions imply an estimated Fair Value.

The move put Codan in the middle of this trade. Scan 95 robotics and automation stocks for other companies exposed to it.

The Two Codan Stories Investors Had To Weigh

The shares cost A$28.43 at the start of the period, and Codan sat between two sharply different but plausible stories about its future.

The bullish Narrative put Fair Value at A$30.05. It leaned on Codan lifting revenue about 14.6% a year and pushing profit margin to 20.0%, helped by higher margin communications products and acquisitions such as Kagwerks.

The bearish view set Fair Value at A$18.5. It accepted assumed revenue growth of 12.2% and a 18.7% margin, yet stressed regulatory costs, geopolitical limits on key markets, and reliance on cyclical gold detection.

What The Results Changed In The Codan Debate

Codan’s H2 2026 results, with revenue at A$481.5m and net income at A$104.0m, supported the bullish case that margins could reset higher. Net margin moved from 15.6% in H2 2025 to 21.6%. That shift aligned more closely with the optimistic 20.0% margin assumption than the cautious 18.7% view, although only over a single period.

The real hinge here was profitability. When you test another company’s story, focus on whether margin targets show up in audited results and track that figure each half year against the original thesis.

What Codan’s Run Up 102% Already Assumes

Codan now trades at A$57.81, and the selected Narrative’s Fair Value sits below that level. The Narrative argues that the current price leans heavily on conflict driven communications demand and on Codan turning a large order book into lasting earnings power.

So the question becomes what has to keep working for today’s price to hold. On this view, a buyer needs to judge whether higher engineering spend and recent deals can consistently win unmanned, Minelab and public safety work fast enough to offset any slowdown from conflict regions.

"While Codan reports very strong demand for unmanned systems and a Communications order book of A$380m, management also highlights low order visibility from conflict regions. Any normalisation of conflict driven orders could expose how much current revenue and earnings rely on conditions that are unlikely to be repeated."
