What General Motors Holders Bought Into

Simply Wall St·11/03/2026 05:26:24
Listen to the news

If General Motors was parked on your watchlist instead of in your portfolio, the past year probably feels like a missed turn. Holding General Motors over the past year would have returned 33.0%, including dividends. That outcome raises an uncomfortable question. Back on 2 November 2025, when analysts were arguing over Ultium battery economics, EV adoption and the value of GM’s software revenue, what clues were already on record that this business mix could support that kind of payoff?

If the move has made General Motors harder to judge, start where the gap is still open and scan 34 high quality undervalued stocks.

The Argument You Would Have Been Weighing On General Motors

The shares cost US$69.09 at the start of the period, and you were effectively choosing between two very different stories about General Motors.

The bullish view set a Fair Value of US$80, a notional price based on its own assumptions, and leaned on Ultium batteries, flexible manufacturing and software like OnStar and Super Cruise to lift margins toward 6.6% and support earnings of US$12.8b by 2028.

The more cautious narrative put Fair Value at US$61.36 and focused on slower EV adoption, tariff headwinds of US$4b to US$5b a year and heavy capital and R&D spending of US$10b to US$12b as key risks to those margin and P/E assumptions.

What The Evidence Said About General Motors

General Motors posted Q3 2026 revenue of US$50.0b and net income of US$3.3b, with net margin at 6.6% versus 2.7% a year earlier. This pointed toward the bullish margin story. At the same time, privacy settlements over driver data and a pause, then exit, from an Indiana battery venture questioned how cleanly software and Ultium investments would translate into steady, high quality earnings.

The period turned on one assumption. You were really testing whether higher margin trucks and services would show up in reported net margin. For a different stock, you can track that same claim by lining up the thesis margin target against what actually appears in the income statement over several quarters.

What General Motors Buyers Are Assuming After A 33% Run

Today General Motors trades at US$89.94. The selected Narrative’s Fair Value sits below that level, which signals a view that the current quote already bakes in a demanding set of expectations for this transition story.

A buyer now is essentially betting that GM can keep ICE cash flowing while EVs, software and legal exposure stay contained enough for that cash to fund the shift. The open question is how the Narrative’s focus on capital strain and execution risk lines up with that bet.

"General Motors (NYSE: GM) is navigating one of the most complex transformations in its century-long history. The company is simultaneously defending a profitable internal combustion engine (ICE) business while investing tens of billions into an electric future that is still uneven, capital-intensive, and politically charged."
