Daiwa Securities Group entered this earnings release with a softer tape, with the stock down over the past week, month and quarter, and closing at ¥1,698.5 on 30 October. Short-term sentiment looks tired. The Q2 2027 headline told a different story. Net income excluding extra items came in at ¥51,432m on revenue of ¥232,628m, backed by a trailing twelve month basic earnings per share of ¥147.28. For a brokerage and investment group that lives on fee pools and trading activity, the key question now is how this earnings run rate compares with its multi year growth record and the current P/E discussion.

The bullish story hangs on Daiwa Securities Group turning base profit and deposits into a steadier earnings engine rather than a one quarter pop.
"Early delivery of the prior base profit target, with FY2025 base profit of ¥182.7 billion already above the medium term goal, gives Daiwa Securities Group room to pursue higher value advisory, structuring and cross sell opportunities."
Q2 adds evidence here. Base profit reached ¥62.3b, up sharply year on year, with ¥125.2b booked in the first half, already more than 80% of the ¥150b medium term plan. Record asset based revenues and record AUM and inflows indicate that advisory led, fee heavy activity is starting to carry more of the load.

Bearish investors worry that fee growth cannot fully offset capital and earnings strain as Daiwa Securities Group leans harder on its balance sheet.
"Despite the planned integration of ORIX Bank with Daiwa Next Bank and the intention to recycle larger deposits into real estate and securities backed loans, the expected reduction of about 5 percentage points in the total capital adequacy ratio and potential AT1 issuance could raise funding costs and constrain the uplift in net interest income and ROE."
Q2 confirms the hit to buffers. The CET1 step down toward roughly 14% and the need for ¥100 to ¥120b of AT1 capital show this risk is not theoretical. ORIX Bank is contributing income, yet the heavier ordinary income drag from alternatives plus a weaker Global Markets quarter means earnings support for capital rebuild is less comfortable than base profit alone suggests.
