Supporters of Erste Group Bank argue that earnings power increasingly rests on digital reach and fee income rather than pure rate tailwinds.
"The main factor that has to go right is that Erste Group Bank sustains its shift toward fee-based income and digital distribution so that higher banking taxes and Romania specific pressures do not erode the earnings path management has outlined."
Q3 results move this claim from story to scorecard. Fees hit a new quarterly high and, excluding Polska, are up 10.7% year to date with guidance for about 10% in 2026. The harsher view on Erste Group Bank hinges on whether higher banking taxes and the Poland build out quietly eat into what looks like robust profitability.
"the steep increase in banking taxes and sector levies toward €372m in 2025 and continued elevated charges in 2026 in Austria, Hungary, Romania and Poland can structurally absorb a larger share of operating profit and limit how much of the revenue base ultimately flows through to net profit and capital generation."
Q3 shows strong net income and RoTE targets reaffirmed, yet the tax burden and Poland integration costs are not broken out as easing. Capital ratios also dipped before profit recognition and risk transfer, so the drag that bears worry about is not clearly disproved here.
