Bank of China (SEHK:3988) Stock Can Q3 Earnings Ease Loan Strain

Listen to the news

Bank of China stock closed at HK$6.145 on Friday after the market absorbed its Q3 2026 report, capping a 7-day gain of about 3.2%. Traders focused on the headline earnings beat, with basic earnings per share at 0.19 CNY and net income excluding extra items at RMB 63,888m, yet the real story sits on the balance sheet. Rising non performing loans over recent quarters and a P/E that sits slightly above peers frame a different question for longer term holders: Is this price reacting to past strength or future strain?

Attractive earnings and a headline P/E are one thing; rising non performing loans are another. If you want bank exposure but prefer cleaner balance sheets, compare this setup with our list of solid balance sheet and fundamentals stocks (200 results)

Q3 2026 Earnings Summary

  • Revenue (Q3 2026 vs Q3 2025): 141,965m CNY vs 139,707m CNY (top line modestly higher year on year).
  • Net Income (Excl. Extra Items, Q3 2026 vs Q3 2025): 63,888m CNY vs 60,069m CNY (earnings level higher than the prior period).

  • Non Performing Loans, NPL balance (Q3 2026 vs Q3 2025): 301,804m CNY vs 288,669m CNY (implied credit risk exposure higher in absolute terms).

Earnings are one thing, but investors who care about what they are paying for Bank of China tend to focus on the cash flowing through the business. Based on Bank of China's cash flows alone, the stock could be a hefty 50% undervalued.

Bank of China: Fees, AI And Overseas Proof Points

Optimists argue Bank of China can lean on overseas reach, fees and AI to do more of the heavy lifting in profit generation.

"Bullish analysts expect Bank of China to keep building on its globalization, fee-based businesses and AI-led digital finance so that overseas profit contribution and non-interest income remain key earnings drivers over the coming years."

Recent numbers show that story gaining traction. Overseas profit contribution is around 27%, with overseas assets above US$1.34b. Non interest income reached RMB 120.4b in H1 and accounts for roughly one third of total income. Management’s AI Plus rollout, with thousands of RPA scenarios and over 2,000 internal assistants, coincides with a better cost to income ratio.

Bank of China: Bad Debt Fears Meet Solid Buffers

Bearish investors worry that Bank of China’s earnings quality could crack as legacy credit problems surface across the system.

"Although Bank of China highlights a low reported non performing loan ratio and high provision coverage, the sector wide build up of an estimated US$3 trillion in hidden bad debt suggests that any future recognition of these risks could lift credit costs and reduce net margins and earnings."

The latest print does not show that stress yet. The NPL ratio sits at 1.22% with provision coverage around 285% and capital adequacy at 18.31%. Net profit still rose in H1, and Q3 net income and EPS increased year on year. The missed milestone is any explicit step up in provisioning for those off balance sheet risks.

Hunt For Quiet Balance Sheet Mispricing

Bank of China just showed how solid reported ratios can sit alongside rising questions about future credit costs. The real opportunity is finding stocks that could be undervalued before the market corrects them.

  • Company 1 - 21% below our estimate - targets a record order backlog while shifting newbuilds toward higher spec, clean fuel commercial vessels.
  • Company 2 - 38% below our estimate - supplies high voltage connectors as grid operators upgrade lines for data centers, rail projects and future HVDC links.
  • Company 3 - 36% below our estimate - expands a housing and industrial project pipeline that depends on turning planned launches into steady presales and project cash flows.

Those are three of them. See all 194 potentially undervalued companies →
