Komatsu just dropped its Q2 2027 numbers and the stock is coming in on the back foot, with the share price down over the last week, month and quarter. That mood sets the stage for a sentiment clash. The machinery giant delivered quarterly revenue of ¥1,115,496m and basic earnings per share of ¥107.90, figures that sit inside a trailing twelve month margin picture that has already eased to 8.9% from 10.3% a year ago. The market is reacting to pressure on profitability. The question is whether a one day price move can really capture that slow grind in margins.

Ask Charlie what explains Komatsu’s margin slide and valuation gap.
Bulls argue Komatsu can lean on richer aftermarket, digital and industrial niches to power cleaner earnings even as equipment cycles ebb.
"The rising weight of parts and services, with aftermarket already accounting for more than half of Construction, Mining & Utility Equipment segment sales and parts revenue of ¥286.5b in FY2026 Q1, creates room for mix driven uplift in gross margin and operating margin as that higher margin base is renewed over time."
Q2 shows the top line and EPS advancing at low to mid teens rates, which aligns with that higher quality mix story. The issue is the trailing 12 month net margin slipping to 8.9% from 10.3%. That gap signals aftermarket, IoT connectivity wins and industrial machinery targets have not yet translated into the margin uplift that bullish analysts anticipated.

Bearish investors worry that Komatsu’s heavier tilt toward parts and rebuilds could trap profitability at a lower level over time.
"Rising dependence on parts and aftermarket, which already account for around 54% of segment sales and roughly 65% in mining, may support stability but could also limit upside to earnings growth if equipment volumes, regional mix and product mix continue to move against higher margin new units."
The latest quarter keeps that concern alive. Revenue and EPS move ahead, yet the trailing net margin compresses to 8.9% from 10.3%. Aftermarket and IoT wins are not yet offsetting pricing, tariffs and softer construction demand in the way bears fear and bulls hoped.
Komatsu shows earnings progress moving one way while sentiment moves another. Real opportunity sits in finding stocks that may be undervalued before repricing appears on a chart.
