A US federal judge dismissed Donald Trump's renewed $10 billion defamation lawsuit against the Wall Street Journal and ruled that the case cannot be re-prosecuted. This is yet another setback for Trump in his legal dispute with the media. Miami Judge Darrin Gayles approved the Wall Street Journal's application to withdraw the lawsuit on Saturday. The lawsuit alleges that the newspaper slandered Trump in a report about his dealings with the late Jeffrey Epstein. Gayles first dismissed the case in April on the grounds of insufficient evidence, but at the time allowed Trump to re-prosecute after additional claims. Trump filed a new version of the lawsuit in May, and the Wall Street Journal believes that the new version has not been effectively improved. The ruling was a major victory for The Wall Street Journal, its parent company News Corp., and Honorary Chairman Rupert Murdoch. In the application to withdraw the lawsuit, the defense stated that the relevant reports were true, and Trump's lawsuit was intended to suppress media criticism of him. The Wall Street Journal, which triggered the lawsuit, reported that Trump had sent Epstein a birthday letter with suggestive content.
