CNO Financial Group’s third quarter results were marked by a notable divergence between revenue and profitability. While the company’s sales growth lagged Wall Street’s expectations, management pointed to robust operating leverage and disciplined expense management as key contributors to the quarter’s non-GAAP profit strength. CEO Gary Bhojwani highlighted the continued expansion of CNO’s agent network and “solid sales momentum across both divisions,” particularly in asset accumulation products and Medicare Supplement policies. The company’s investment portfolio also delivered a significant lift to margins, benefiting from sustained high new money rates and favorable alternative investment income.
Looking forward, CNO’s updated full-year guidance relies on maintaining expense discipline, optimizing capital deployment, and capitalizing on shifting market trends in Medicare. CFO Paul McDonough emphasized that operational efficiency and “continued growth in our FHLB program” will play major roles in supporting the company’s targeted free cash flow range. Management expects the ongoing transition in the Medicare market—where consumers are increasingly favoring Medicare Supplement products over Medicare Advantage—to fuel further growth, with Bhojwani noting that “this dislocation plays to our strength” as a provider of both products and advisory services. Technology modernization and reinsurance strategies are also expected to shape CNO’s trajectory into 2027.
Management attributed the quarter’s margin expansion to favorable insurance product trends, a strong investment environment, and operational leverage from scale.
CNO’s outlook is driven by operational efficiency, Medicare market trends, and disciplined capital allocation.
In the coming quarters, our analysts will monitor (1) the pace of Medicare Supplement policy growth as industry disruption continues, (2) execution of expense controls and technology modernization initiatives, and (3) progress on optimizing Bermuda reinsurance assets and capital. The sustainability of investment income and the ability to maintain agent productivity will also be important markers of CNO’s execution.
