The Birmingham, Alabama-based company said it had net income of $2.80 per share. Earnings, adjusted for non-recurring costs and to account for discontinued operations, came to $2.83 per share.

The results topped Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of eight analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of $2.79 per share.

The construction materials company posted revenue of $2.18 billion in the period, missing Street forecasts. Six analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $2.23 billion.
