According to people familiar with the matter, the London Metal Exchange is aiming to turn metals stored in its Hong Kong warehouses into digital assets that can be used for financing. This move is closely related to the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region's five-year plan to build a commodity hub. The creation of digital assets supported by metals is expected to attract investors, traders and financial institutions. This is the goal of Hong Kong's new five-year economic blueprint released in September this year, and it will also open up new revenue streams for LME. The London Exchange responded: “LME is in the early stages of exploring tokenizing OTC metal inventories to support business financing... We will be communicating with stakeholders to develop our plans.” LME has scheduled an invitation-only offline industry roundtable in early November to discuss the initiative.
