Third quarter gross merchandise sales rose 8.8% to $2.6 billion.
Active buyers grew 1% year over year to 88 million.
Personalization improvements added 2 percentage points to annualized GMS growth.
On its third quarter 2026 earnings call, held on Oct. 28, 2026, Etsy (NYSE:ETSY) announced that its marketplace firmly reentered growth mode after three straight quarters of accelerating performance. A long-term investor cares because expanding user engagement and rising order values signal that product investments are expanding the company's competitive moat. Three things management said on the call stand out.
Reactivating existing shoppers while expanding new user acquisition provides a larger pool of repeat demand for sellers. Higher engagement and higher average spending demonstrate that buyers are finding more value on the platform.
Active buyers returned to year-over-year growth for the first time in two years, increasing 1% to approximately 88 million on a trailing 12-month basis.

By using AI and machine learning to better understand individual taste and buyer intent, search algorithms surface higher-quality listings that convert at higher rates. These technical upgrades directly expand gross merchandise sales (GMS), which measures total marketplace transaction value.
For example, by the third quarter, we estimate that personalization improvements alone contributed approximately 2 percentage points to our annualized year-over-year GMS growth rate.

Reaching younger demographics through off-site channels, like social video, expands brand awareness while holding spending accountable to strict return on investment (ROI) metrics. This disciplined allocation yields higher returns alongside top-line gains.
In the third quarter, we increased our marketing spending on a year-over-year basis, but the GMS from marketing grew faster than that. Our ROIs improved year over year on our marketing spending in the third quarter.

Marketplace momentum accelerates as artificial intelligence elevates search discovery. Etsy retains structural advantages in its catalog of 100 million unique items and seller trust that mass rivals can't match, while management watches pricing discipline.
As AI makes it easier to create and replicate products at scale, we believe the human creativity, craftsmanship, and connection that have always made Etsy special will matter even more.

Strategic investments in seller tools position the platform to capture broader market share.
We're only just starting to begin to see what's possible as we bring AI together with our understanding of our buyers and our inventory to really make Etsy that incredibly personal, relevant, and inspiring, and unique place to shop that we believe is so valuable.
