ASMPT (SEHK:522) Stock Price Sinks Even As Q3 Earnings Rebound

Listen to the news

ASMPT walked into its Q3 2026 report with a bruised share chart, down about 25% over the past month, and a market narrative that already treated it as a discounted way to play semiconductor capital spending. The fresh numbers told a sharper story. Quarterly revenue reached HK$5,247.0m and basic earnings per share hit HK$1.28, while trailing P/E sat around 20.9x against higher industry multiples. Yet the stock closed at HK$118.3 today after a further slide this week, a reaction that jars with the scale of the earnings reset.

ASMPT’s AI Playbook Meets Hard Earnings Milestones

Optimists framed ASMPT as an execution story tied to AI specific tools, portfolio pruning and better cash generation.

"The main thing that has to go right is that ASMPT successfully executes its focus on back-end packaging while managing higher operating expenses and supply chain lead times so that margins and cash generation benefit from rising TCB, photonics and China-related demand."

Q3 hits several checkpoints. Record group bookings of US$1.13b and a 1.69 book to bill show AI related demand is translating into contracted work. Adjusted gross margin of 42.9% with SEMI in the mid 40s indicates mix is tilting toward higher value tools. Lead times remain 6 to 9 months, so the order book is validated, while the cash timing still needs watching.

ASMPT Backlog Fears Meet Hard Data

The harsher view argues ASMPT’s AI surge could yet stall if long lead times turn booked demand into a mirage rather than revenue.

"Although ASMPT points to strong AI related bookings across TCB, photonics and SMT, longer lead times for key materials and 6 to 9 month manufacturing and order conversion cycles mean any slowdown in customer capex could leave a large portion of the current backlog at risk of delay or repricing, which would pressure future revenue recognition and working capital."

Q3 mechanics do not show that stress. Record US$1.13b bookings, a 1.69 book to bill and Q4 revenue guidance of US$670m to US$730m indicate orders are still converting. Lead times remain 6 to 9 months, and management reports no capacity constraints or widespread deferrals. The risk is timing forward, not yet visible in reported working capital or in revenue guidance for the next quarter.

Hunt For The Next Reset

ASMPT recently highlighted how a sharp earnings reset can move out of step with its share price. The real opportunity could sit in stocks where fundamentals improve before valuations catch up.

  • Company 1 - 36% below our estimate - tie greentec steel investments and divisional restructuring to higher margin downstream industrial contracts.
  • Company 2 - 21% below our estimate - lean into electrification, data centers and automation using acquisitions and digital tools for electrical distribution.
  • Company 3 - 26% below our estimate - channel test focused CapEx toward memory and display customers needing advanced packaging and AI logic testing.
