Commvault (CVLT) Stock Climbs As Q2 Earnings Highlight ARR Strength

Simply Wall St·10/28/2026 00:16:32
Listen to the news

Commvault Systems came into this Q2 2027 earnings print with its stock already on a strong run, then tacked on another 2.9% to finish at US$172.55 after the release. The reaction looks like a quick vote of confidence in one thing that really matters for this data protection specialist: subscription based annual recurring revenue and free cash generation are pulling more weight than headline revenue. Subscription annual recurring revenue reached US$1.104b and free cash flow for the quarter hit US$71m, which puts the focus squarely on the quality and durability of cash coming in.

Love the growing subscription ARR and cash generation at Commvault Systems but want a broader set of recurring revenue stories with strong balance sheets to compare it against? Line this quarter up against our list of solid balance sheet and fundamentals stocks (24 results)

Q2 2027 Earnings Summary

  • Total Revenue (Q2 2027 vs Q2 2026): US$312.4m vs. US$276.2m (up roughly 13%)
  • Net Income, Excl. Extra Items (Q2 2027 vs Q2 2026): US$29.1m vs. US$14.7m (up roughly 98%)
  • Basic EPS (Q2 2027 vs Q2 2026): US$0.71 vs. US$0.33 (up roughly 113%)
  • Subscription Annual Recurring Revenue, ARR (Q2 2027 vs Q2 2026): US$1.104b vs. prior year ARR level (management reported 20% year on year growth)

Earnings are one thing, but investors who care about what a business is really worth often spend more time on cash flows than the latest EPS figure. When you look at Commvault Systems' cash generation on its own, the stock could be a hefty 33% undervalued.

Commvault Bull Case: SaaS Ambition Meets Hard Numbers

The bullish pitch is that Commvault Systems can turn its SaaS and identity push into a higher quality, more predictable engine. That is a big claim.

"Rapid expansion and cross sell momentum within Commvault Systems SaaS platform is now reinforced by subscription ARR of US$1.05b, SaaS ARR of US$424m growing at 38% year over year, and almost half of SaaS customers adopting multiple products. Together, these factors can support higher quality revenue and EBIT margins."

Q2 backs this up. Subscription ARR is US$1.104b and SaaS ARR is US$454m with 35% growth, and 53% of managed SaaS customers use at least two products. Non GAAP EBIT margin is 21.9%. The model is scaling in the direction that narrative wanted.

Commvault Bear Case: Execution And Governance Risks Under Review

The bear angle says execution hurdles and governance noise could undercut that subscription story even with good quarterly prints.

"The main thing that has to go right is that Commvault Systems continues to scale its higher margin SaaS and identity resilience offerings while managing hardware and FX headwinds and any governance overhang from the ongoing investigation."

Recent numbers argue that operational concerns are not yet biting. SaaS ARR still rises 35%, identity and data security drive about 30% of net new subscription ARR, and management raises full year ARR, revenue and free cash flow guidance. The governance probe announced in August 2026 remains a risk, but it has not visibly disrupted customer demand or margin progress in Q2.

  • Company 2 - 27% below our estimate - anchors custom chips, connectivity and security hardware that big cloud and software customers increasingly treat as essential infrastructure.
  • Company 3 - 31% below our estimate - targets complex manufacturing programs as record wins in regulated sectors progress from early design to full scale production.
