IonQ Inc (NYSE:IONQ) shares are rising Tuesday. The quantum computing company said it received $7.5 million in follow-on funding from the Air Force Research Laboratory to expand a quantum network. Here’s what you should know.
On Tuesday, IonQ announced the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), the Air Force’s research arm, will pay it $7.5 million to fund the next stage of a quantum network in Rome, New York.
IonQ makes quantum computers, machines that use the physics of extremely small particles to process information in ways conventional computers cannot. It also builds the hardware and software that connect those machines into a network, so they can share information.
This is not brand-new money, though. IonQ already counted the $7.5 million in a $21.1 million collaboration it unveiled in January 2025.
AFRL already has the network’s physical foundation from phase one. Phase two goes further: getting dissimilar quantum machines to connect outside the lab, the way internet hardware connects unlike computers. The signals will travel through ordinary telecom networks and also across open air, IonQ says.
Four additions power the upgrade. The first beams quantum signals through the air. Its optics aim and track on their own, so two points with a clear view of each other can share entanglement, the link that ties quantum systems together, over a secure channel. The second makes standard telecom wavelengths a common language: two converter modules shift signals so quantum and conventional machines of different types can work together.
Software and hardware complete the package. Upgrades to the control software automate daily operation, from running experiments and exporting results to testing the system, tracking its performance live and handling faults. On the hardware side, the network interface cards for quantum signals get refreshed, as do the polarization controls, and the equipment now works with the O-band.
Jordan Shapiro, IonQ’s president of its quantum platform, said the advanced optics and automated software “close the gap between laboratory demonstration and field deployment.” In Shapiro’s view, the funding backs IonQ’s strategy of covering every layer of the technology itself.
IONQ Price Action: IonQ shares were up 6.76% at $32.84 at the time of publication on Tuesday, according to Benzinga Pro.
