Shares of water technology company Xylem (NYSE:XYL) fell 9.7% in the morning session after the company missed third-quarter revenue and earnings estimates and lowered its full-year financial outlook.
According to a company press release, Xylem reported third-quarter revenue of $2.20 billion, down 3% year over year, alongside adjusted earnings of $1.44 per share. Both figures fell short of Wall Street expectations, with analysts projecting revenue of $2.28 billion and adjusted earnings of $1.45 per share. Project timing and cautious customer spending affected third-quarter performance. In response to these headwinds, Xylem reduced its full-year 2026 revenue guidance to approximately $8.95 billion, representing an expected 1% decline compared with its prior forecast of 2% growth.
Management also lowered full-year adjusted earnings guidance to between $5.40 and $5.45 per share, down from the previous range of $5.55 to $5.70 per share. Additionally, the company unveiled plans to divest two business units and reorganize operations into three distinct segments. The downward revision to guidance and persistent project delays weighed heavily on investor sentiment.

Xylem’s shares are not very volatile and have only had 3 moves greater than 5% over the last year. In that context, today’s move indicates the market considers this news meaningful, although it might not be something that would fundamentally change its perception of the business.
The biggest move we wrote about over the last year was 9 months ago when the stock dropped 6.5% on the news that the company provided a disappointing financial forecast for 2026, citing weaker-than-expected demand for its water-treatment equipment.
The downbeat outlook overshadowed the company's fourth-quarter results, which actually beat Wall Street's expectations for both revenue and earnings. For the full year 2026, Xylem projected revenue between $9.1 billion and $9.2 billion, falling short of the analyst consensus of $9.33 billion. Similarly, the company's adjusted earnings per share (EPS) guidance of $5.35 to $5.60 had a midpoint slightly below the consensus estimate of $5.55. The market's negative reaction suggested that investors were more focused on the cautious forward guidance than the solid performance of the previous quarter.
Xylem is down 28.3% since the beginning of the year, and at $98.31 per share, it is trading 35.7% below its 52-week high of $152.95 from October 2025. Investors who bought $1,000 worth of Xylem’s shares 5 years ago would now be looking at only $768.09.
