What Diamondback Energy Doubters Got Wrong

Listen to the news

If you only skimmed headlines about insider sales and capital return debates at Diamondback Energy this year, the actual payoff might come as a surprise. Holding Diamondback Energy from the start of the year would have returned 37.4%, including dividends. If you had been deciding on 1 January whether to own this producer with its mix of Permian growth promises and cash flow worries, what information really mattered for judging that trade off?

The easy part of this move is behind Diamondback Energy. Zero in on 28 high quality undervalued stocks for companies trading below our estimates.

The Two Stories Investors Had To Weigh On Diamondback Energy

The shares cost US$150 at the start of the period, so anyone looking at Diamondback Energy then had to decide which story to back.

The bullish view argued that successful Permian consolidation and efficiency gains would support strong cash generation. Its Fair Value was US$181, a rough guide to the price that Narrative’s assumptions implied, built on ideas like 8.5% revenue growth and a 26.9% profit margin.

The bearish camp saw more fragility. That Fair Value sat at US$141 and leaned on concerns that profit margins could shrink from 31.4% to 19.1%, even if revenue still grew.

What The Results Changed For Diamondback Energy

Diamondback Energy cleared a major operational hurdle by lifting quarterly output above 1 million boe/d while keeping capital spending flat. Revenue rose from US$3,465m to US$5,284m and net income grew from US$695m to US$1,871m. Net margin moved from 20.1% to 35.4%. That profitability profile provided more support to the optimistic case than to the cautious one.

The useful takeaway is simple. When an investment thesis depends on efficiency and cash generation, treat margin direction as the key test. Track whether higher production and guidance come with flat or lower capex, and whether net margin actually moves in line with the narrative you are being presented.

What Diamondback Energy’s Price Already Bakes In

Diamondback Energy now trades at US$206, up 37.4% from the start of the year. The selected Narrative’s Fair Value sits above the current price, framing that move as only a partial reflection of what efficient Permian execution and gas marketing could support.

The core question is whether Diamondback can keep translating field efficiency, longer laterals and gas commercialization into durable cash generation. A buyer today would need to judge that the firm can continue executing its efficiency playbook across drilling, completions and capital returns.

"The main factor that has to go right is that Diamondback continues to execute on its efficiency playbook, including longer laterals, incremental improvements in drilling and completions, and disciplined return of capital choices as oil prices and service costs change."
