06:23 AM EDT, 10/26/2026 (MT Newswires) -- The European Union is preparing to expand its safeguard measures to reduce imports of Chinese chemicals, furniture, and machinery by 2027 amid ongoing efforts to lower its trade deficit with China, Bloomberg News reported Monday, citing people familiar with the matter. As the bloc also seeks to protect domestic manufacturing, sources said the European Commission is considering import quotas or tariffs, with proposals expected as early as the first quarter of 2027. The proposed measures are expected to adhere to World Trade Organization rules and apply to other countries outside the European Economic Area, Bloomberg wrote. These rumored proposals follow preliminary commitments secured from Beijing in early October to "moderate" hybrid vehicle exports. The European Commission did not immediately respond to a request for comment from MT Newswires. (Market Chatter news is derived from conversations with market professionals globally.
