Ratos (OM:RATO B) Stock Price Lags Cleaner Q3 Earnings Recovery

Simply Wall St·10/25/2026 01:32:37
Listen to the news

Ratos closed today at SEK39.5 after the Q3 2026 report, a price that still bakes in plenty of doubt about a group with a long history of weak profitability. The headline this quarter is cleaner earnings power. Adjusted EBITA rose sharply and adjusted earnings per share nearly doubled versus a year ago, helped by stronger contribution from industrial holdings and tighter cost control.

In the short term, the stock reaction looks muted compared with those improvements. Over a longer horizon, the bigger question for investors is whether this step up in returns on capital and cash discipline can turn a discounted holding company into a consistently profitable one.

Like the cleaner earnings in this Ratos quarter but wary of backing a holding company that still carries a long record of weak profitability? Q3 2026 Earnings Summary

  • Revenue (Q3 2026 vs. Q3 2025): SEK 4,449m vs. SEK 4,165m (up about 7%)
  • Net Income (Excl. Extra Items, Q3 2026 vs. Q3 2025): profit of SEK 273m vs. profit of SEK 395m (down about 31%)
  • Basic EPS (Q3 2026 vs. Q3 2025): SEK 0.83 vs. SEK 1.21 (decline of about 31%)
  • Return on Capital Employed (ROCE, Q3 2026 vs. Q3 2025): 7.9% vs. a prior-year level that was about 1.6 percentage points lower (improvement of about 160 bps)
Earnings are one thing, but investors who care about valuation usually focus on the cash that actually comes through the door and stays there. Looking at Ratos' cash flows rather than the reported losses, the stock could be a dramatic 38% undervalued.

Ratos Bull Case Hinges On Execution Milestones

The bullish story around Ratos hinges on whether focused capital and project execution really translate into better profitability and reinvestment capacity.

"The main factor that has to go right is that Ratos continues to execute disciplined bolt-on acquisitions and large automation and digital projects, so that margin benefits, higher returns on capital and reinvestment capacity follow through after the current investment phase."

Q3 gives partial proof. Group ROCE reached 7.9%, with Diab at 16.6% and HL Display around 21%, which supports the higher returns part of the claim. Presis Infra, Oase and KVD Group all lifted profitability and returns, while the automation heavy Speed unit remains a drag, showing that not every project is through the investment slog yet.

Ratos Results Still Expose Execution Gaps

Bearish investors worry that Ratos talks up its balance sheet but drags its feet on putting that firepower to work.

"Although Ratos highlights a stronger balance sheet and significant financial flexibility after items such as the Diab settlement, the Sentia dividend and M&A insurance proceeds, the group now sits below its own 1.5 to 2.5x leverage target and still has not outlined a clear timetable to redeploy roughly SEK 1.6b of recent nonrecurring cash into earnings generating assets."

Q3 confirms the cash is still largely parked. Adjusted leverage is only about 1.1x, management again talked about selective add ons and highlighted one HL Display deal. However, there is no concrete deployment schedule for the remaining capital. The balance sheet remains underused, so this concern is not resolved.

Hunt For Mispriced Cash Generators

Ratos now has cleaner earnings power and a stronger balance sheet that the share price still treats cautiously. The real opportunity is finding stocks that could be undervalued before the market closes that gap.

  • Company 1 - 29% below our estimate - sell grid testing equipment needed as utilities replace aging networks and connect electrified transport.
  • Company 2 - 33% below our estimate - shift production toward composite cylinders and clean energy equipment to turn past capacity projects into higher margin orders.
  • Company 3 - 25% below our estimate - add petrochemicals flexibility and new retail outlets to retain more value from every barrel processed.
