What BASF Bulls Got Right

Simply Wall St·10/24/2026 16:33:24
Listen to the news

If you had chosen BASF on 23 October 2025, you were stepping into a live debate about whether portfolio reshaping and an Agricultural Solutions IPO could really justify analysts seeing the shares as 14% above the start price, or whether rising compliance costs and China risk pointed 11% below it. Holding BASF over the past year would have returned 25.1%, including dividends. If you faced that fork in the road again, which side of the business story would carry more weight?

Narratives are how investors here put a case on the record, with explicit assumptions about revenue, margins and the multiple. Those assumptions imply an estimated Fair Value.

The move put BASF in the middle of this trade. Scan 32 best rare earth metal stocks for other companies exposed to it.

The Two BASF Stories Investors Had In Front Of Them

The shares cost €43.71 at the start of the period, and anyone looking at BASF then had to choose which future seemed more plausible.

On the bullish side, the Fair Value sat at €49.92. This view was built on the idea that portfolio optimisation and an IPO of Agricultural Solutions by 2027 would shift the group toward higher margin businesses.

The bearish view anchored Fair Value at €39. This scenario stressed that rising compliance and decarbonisation costs could squeeze margins and turn the large Zhanjiang Verbund project in China into a higher risk bet.

What The Results Changed In The BASF Story

The Zhanjiang Verbund site starting up on time and below budget, with BASF targeting €4b to €5b in sales by 2030 and profitability from 2027, supported the optimistic argument that China investment and portfolio reshaping could lift quality of earnings. Q2 2026 results pointed the same way. Revenue and net income both rose, and net margin moved to 3.4% from roughly zero, although longer term profitability targets still were not proven.

The clear hinge here was whether heavy capital projects and portfolio moves would improve margins rather than just scale. When you assess another complex industrial, track whether promised cost savings and big-ticket sites show up in reported margin percentage within a couple of years of going live.

What BASF's Recent Run Now Asks You To Believe

BASF trades at €52.45 after a 25.1% gain over the past year, while the selected Narrative’s Fair Value sits below the current price. The focus has shifted from headline earnings to whether higher guidance, cost cuts and portfolio reshaping eventually feed through to healthier cash generation.

For today’s valuation to add up, you would need to judge that BASF can turn its cost programs, Zhanjiang build out and asset sales into consistent free cash flow instead of stop-start progress weighed by working capital swings and transformation spending.

"Despite BASF reporting higher EBITDA before special items and raising its 2026 EBITDA guidance range, free cash flow in Q2 2026 moved to a loss of €189m with working capital build and about €200m of transformation cash outflows, which points to a risk that ongoing cost programs and earnings guidance do not translate into the expected improvement in free cash flow and net debt reduction."
