Why Alibaba Group Fell Even As Sales Rose

Listen to the news

If you had backed Alibaba Group at the start of this review window expecting cloud and AI momentum to translate smoothly into shareholder gains, the experience would have looked very different on your statement. Holding Alibaba Group over the past year would have meant a 42.5% loss, including dividends. If that decision rested on projected revenue growth of 21.0%, a 12.3% profit margin, and a 30x future P/E, what did that original case fail to allow for?

Alibaba Group is not the only name tied to this theme. Zero in on 55 AI infrastructure stocks and compare how each one is priced.

The Argument Alibaba Investors Were Really Having

The shares cost US$172 at the start of the period, and Alibaba Group sat between two very different but reasonable stories about what that tag implied.

On the bullish side, one published view put Fair Value at US$233, a price those assumptions implied based on projected revenue growth of 21.0% and a future P/E of 30.0x over five years. That same model translated into an intrinsic range of US$254 to US$318 and framed the gap as 35% above the start price.

The bearish narrative still allowed for expansion, just with more friction. It pointed to a Fair Value of US$107, reflecting a five year path built on 14.1% revenue growth, a 13.0% profit margin, and concern that US China trade and regulatory risk could cap the multiple at a future P/E of 15.2x.

What The Results Changed For Alibaba Group

The biggest real world twist for Alibaba Group was that reported revenue reached CNY 268,953m in Q1 2027, ahead of CNY 247,652m a year earlier, which leaned toward the bullish demand story. Profit told a different tale. Net income excluding extra items dropped from CNY 43,116m to CNY 10,537m and net margin slipped from 17.4% to 3.9%, which firmly backed the cautious case.

The lesson to carry elsewhere is simple. When a thesis leans on double digit profitability and a rich P/E, track net margin and absolute earnings in each report, not just revenue or product headlines. Then test whether that profitability actually holds up.

What You Would Be Paying For In Alibaba Group Today

Alibaba Group now trades at US$99.64. The selected Narrative argues that its Fair Value sits above that price because the market focus on Chinese e-commerce misses a wider technology platform and investment portfolio tied to AI, cloud, fintech, and digital infrastructure.

That view only holds if you believe Alibaba can keep turning this broader ecosystem, including asset stakes and AI exposure, into durable cash generation that justifies more than an e-commerce label.

"Alibaba is one of the few large-cap companies in the world where there appears to be a meaningful gap between market perception and the underlying value of its assets. At current prices, many investors still view Alibaba primarily as a Chinese e-commerce company. However, a closer look reveals a much broader technology ecosystem with exposure to some of the most important long-term trends in AI, cloud computing, fintech, and digital infrastructure."
