First BanCorp slipped only 0.1% to US$27.31 on Thursday, a flat reaction for a regional bank that just printed another solid profit quarter. The Q3 2026 release showed net income of US$96.1m and basic earnings per share of US$0.64, keeping the earnings run rate firm even as the share price has drifted lower over the past three months.
The near term looks quiet on the screen. The longer view looks very different. Earnings over the past year and a P/E of 11.2x against higher peer multiples are what will matter for investors thinking beyond this week’s tape.
If you appreciate the earnings power at First BanCorp but prefer a broader range of bank stocks that offer solid profitability and balance sheet support at reasonable earnings multiples, compare this setup with our 30 high quality undervalued stocks.

The bullish story depends on whether First BanCorp can turn its asset sensitivity and technology spending into higher earning power, rather than only headline growth.
"The main factor that has to go right is that First BanCorp continues to translate its asset sensitive balance sheet, technology and AI investment, and strong capital position into sustained net interest margin expansion and an efficiency ratio near the low 50% range, while managing legal and compliance risks."
Q3 data is mixed against that goal. Net interest margin on a trailing basis is broadly unchanged at 4.75%, not expanding. At the same time, the efficiency ratio sits at 50%, slightly better than the low 50% objective, supported by disciplined expenses despite a one-off reserve.
On the risk side, investors are focused on whether legal issues and softer consumer credit could erode that earnings profile.
"Rising legal, compliance and reputational pressure tied to allegations about past banking services for Jeffrey Epstein, including class action litigation and fiduciary duty investigations, could lead to higher legal costs, potential settlements or regulatory actions and weigh on net margins and earnings."
Quarterly results show only a modest legal-related reserve tied to an OREO property ruling, with net income at US$96.1m and credit metrics such as a 0.59% NPA ratio and 1.81% ACL coverage consistent with stable asset quality. As a result, margin pressure from these risks has not yet materialized.

First BanCorp shows how a steady profit print can still meet a muted share reaction. The real opportunity is finding stocks that might be undervalued before the market closes that kind of gap.
