P&G (PG) Stock Jumps As Q1 Earnings Fuel Cash Flow Cheer

Simply Wall St·10/22/2026 23:41:57
Listen to the news

Procter & Gamble came into this print with a premium consumer staples reputation and a trailing P/E of 24.4x, and the stock had largely moved sideways in recent weeks. Q1 2027 earnings reset that mood in a hurry. The shares jumped 5.6% today after the company posted core EPS of about US$2.00 on US$23.3b of revenue and delivered free cash flow productivity of 93%.

The market is cheering the profit and cash story. The real tension is that this rally lands against trailing net margins that sit at 17.9%, below last year’s 19.4% peak.

Love Procter & Gamble’s cash generation but concerned that net margins are below last year’s peak? You can compare it with a wider set of resilient, cash-rich peers in our list of solid balance sheet and fundamentals stocks (26 results).

Q1 2027 Earnings Summary

  • Revenue (Q1 2027 vs. Q1 2026): US$23,276m vs. US$22,386m (top line higher year on year)
  • Net Income (Excl. Extra Items, Q1 2027 vs. Q1 2026): US$4,731m vs. US$4,677m (profit roughly in line with prior year)
  • Basic EPS (Q1 2027 vs. Q1 2026): US$2.00 vs. US$1.996925 (per share earnings broadly stable)
  • Trailing Net Income Margin (TTM to Q1 2027 vs. prior year peak): 17.9% vs. 19.4% (margin lower than last year’s high point)

Earnings paint one picture for Procter & Gamble, but investors who care about what they are actually paying for often anchor on the cash coming through the door. Free cash flow can tell a different story about what this profit engine is worth.

On Procter & Gamble's cash flows alone, and treating today’s price move as just one input, the stock could be a solid 22% undervalued.

P&G’s moat and pricing power on trial

"Procter & Gamble operates within a very competitive environment. However, its higher operating margins and wide moat its a clear sign it still operates with competitive advantages over its competitors as well as it has the capability of raising prices if needed."

Procter & Gamble just put that claim under the microscope. Organic sales rose 4% with volume adding 2.4 points and pricing only 0.4 points, so most growth came from more units sold rather than price hikes. Core gross margin fell 150 bps and operating margin slipped 80 bps despite heavy productivity savings. That combination suggests the moat is still supporting broad-based growth across all categories and regions, yet current cost pressure is limiting how fully pricing power shows up in profitability.

Testing fears of margin erosion and slow growth

"Despite this, I feel the future for this company still holds some friction by the appearance of fierce competition, pressuring Procter & Gamble to reduce its prices and by consequence its operating margins."

The latest quarter partially echoes that concern. Management maintained guidance for core EPS to be flat to up 3% and flagged roughly US$1.4b in commodity, energy and transport headwinds plus around US$1.9b of below the line pressure. Core EPS held at US$2.00, helped by strong free cash flow productivity of 93% and ongoing buybacks. Organic sales grew across all 10 categories and 6 regions, which pushes back on a demand slowdown even as reported net margin of 17.9% trails last year’s 19.4% peak.
