SEI Investments (SEIC) Stock Price Slips After Strong Q3 Earnings

Simply Wall St·10/22/2026 23:32:45
Listen to the news

SEI Investments just released Q3 2026 numbers and the share price reaction was swift. The stock slipped 3.6% to about US$104.50, even though adjusted operating profit grew 25% and adjusted earnings per share increased 24% year on year. That disconnect is the story today.

Traders focused on the headline pullback. Long term holders are staring at a different picture, one where adjusted margins held near record levels despite a one off incentive hit, and sales momentum set a new annual record with a quarter still to go.

If you appreciate the resilience in SEI Investments' margins but are uneasy about a price drop that followed a strong earnings line, consider exploring our screener of stocks with similar profit strength and balance sheet support in the list of solid balance sheet and fundamentals stocks (26 results).

SEI margin story meets real-world execution

SEI Investments has talked up a shift toward richer services and platforms. This quarter gives you a reality check on that ambition.

"Professional services and Data Cloud offerings are being scaled across the company, with leadership roles created to expand these 30 to 40% margin services beyond Private Banking into other segments, which can lift blended operating margins and earnings over time as attach rates rise."

Adjusted operating profit rose faster than revenue and adjusted margins moved higher year on year even with a one off incentive accrual. Private Banking operating profit jumped faster than its sales and professional services were called out as a key driver. That supports the idea that higher margin work is gaining share in the mix.

Fee mix and capital return promises under pressure

The concern is that newer products and heavy capital returns could backfire if economics soften. The latest quarter lets you check that fear.

"The plan to increase stock repurchases from the US$112 million level in the second quarter of 2026 and return 90% to 100% of free cash flow depends on continued strong cash generation."

SEI Investments lifted Q3 buybacks to US$215m and the board expanded authorization by US$800m, while adjusted EPS climbed 24% and adjusted operating profit advanced 25%. Net profit margin on a trailing basis eased to 28.1% from 31.1%, so the cash return promise is being acted on as margin pressure exists, not after it clears.

Hunt For Earnings Disconnects

SEI Investments highlights how strong reported numbers can coincide with a softer share price. The real opportunity could sit in stocks that appear misaligned before expectations reset.

  • Company 1 - 44% below our estimate - targets the shift to larger digital displays as venues, advertisers and transport hubs upgrade signage into software-linked LED walls.
  • Company 2 - 35% below our estimate - converts long-term AI infrastructure commitments and multicloud database migrations into subscriptions that reshape how enterprise workloads run.
  • Company 3 - 30% below our estimate - rides retailers expanding shelf space for coconut-based drinks as private label contracts and branded volumes develop together.
