Dow came into this Q3 2026 report as a discounted chemicals heavyweight, priced like a slow, cyclical grinder rather than a recovery story. The stock closed up 4.7% to $31.81 on the day, a punchy move for a mature materials company. That reaction hangs on one core reality. Net sales reached $11.27b for the quarter and earnings per share landed at $0.63, enough to push quarterly profit back into solidly positive territory after recent losses.

The bullish story hinges on Dow turning cost programs and asset actions into a higher earnings base rather than a one quarter sugar hit.
"The main requirement is that Dow continues to execute its self-help and transformation initiatives on time and at the scale management is targeting."
Q3 gave tangible proof. Operating EBITDA moved above US$1.5b with about US$250m of transformation benefits in the quarter and roughly US$450m year to date. Management now talks about US$1.3b of net self help benefits in 2027, plus solid free cash flow of about US$1.1b this quarter and more than US$400m of working capital release. That combination shows Dow hitting important execution milestones behind the bullish earnings hypothesis.

Bearish views hang on the idea that Dow’s cost cuts get swallowed by weak polyethylene pricing rather than lifting earnings power.
"Although Dow is increasing its 2026 self help target to more than US$1.3b through programs like Transform to Outperform, the recent cut to Q3 EBITDA expectations to US$1.5b to US$1.6b on weaker polyethylene pricing suggests that incremental cost savings may be absorbed just to hold earnings and net margins flat rather than lift them."
This quarter did not fully support that worry. Q3 operating EBITDA landed above US$1.5b despite earlier guidance cuts, and polyethylene and silicones saw volume and pricing strength. Around 70% of workforce reductions are already executed and Q3 transformation benefits of about US$250m, plus Q4 EBITDA guidance near US$1.5b, indicate self help is adding to earnings rather than only offsetting pricing pressure so far.
Dow just showed how a single quarter can reset the conversation around a mature industrial company. The real opportunity is hunting for stocks that could be undervalued before the market adjusts its view.
