Chubb shares closed at US$363.95 on Thursday, up 2.5% on the day, as investors gave a quick thumbs up to fresh Q3 2026 numbers. The headline was clear. Core operating earnings reached US$2.98b, with core operating earnings per share at US$7.66, powered by property and casualty underwriting and investment income.
The short term pop only tells part of the story. What really matters for holders is that trailing 12 month profit margins have improved and return on tangible equity in the quarter reached 21.6%. That combination puts the focus squarely on whether this insurance powerhouse can keep compounding profits, even as forecasts point to softer growth ahead.

Earnings tell part of Chubb's story, but investors who care about what they are really paying for usually track the cash coming through the business. When you focus purely on Chubb's cash flows, the stock could be a whopping 46% undervalued.
Bulls argue Chubb can lean on scale, rising investment income and tech spending to keep earnings power intact.
"Enterprise wide use of technology, AI and data, including a Chief Scientist for AI and analytics and new global heads for digital business and partnerships, together with advanced rating algorithms in areas like high net worth personal lines, is expected to support more precise underwriting and digital distribution that can influence both revenue growth and net margins."
Record core operating earnings of US$2.98b and a 21.6% core operating return on tangible equity align with that ambition. The high net worth personal lines book, with a 60.3% combined ratio, is exactly where those algorithms matter and the profitability there supports the bullish case on execution so far.
The bear narrative worries that underwriting discipline collides with loss inflation and property pruning, leaving growth and profitability exposed.
"The main thing that has to go right is that Chubb maintains underwriting discipline as it sheds underpriced large account and E&S property, while casualty loss cost trends running at up to 6% to 7% for primary and 9.5% to 12% for excess do not erode the strength implied by an 83.8% P&C combined ratio and a 21.2% core operating return on tangible equity."
The Q3 P&C combined ratio at 84.1% is still strong but has moved higher, and North America Commercial premiums fell 2.7% as nonrenewals and added reinsurance weighed. That mix of slightly thinner underwriting margin and slower commercial volume shows some of the pressure the cautious view anticipated, even if overall profitability remains healthy.
