Skydance (SKYD) shares inched higher late on Thursday after Semafor reported that Elon Musk had invested roughly $1 billion in the mass media company. The investment brings another billionaire into David Ellison’s corner as Skydance integrates WBD studios, streaming platforms, and television networks into its broader entertainment business.
Despite today’s gains, however, Skydance stock remains down more than 40% versus the start of 2026.
Musk's investment came together around the same time as commitments from other SKYD investors, including board member Laurene Powell Jobs, Semafor revealed, citing people familiar with the matter. Neither the billionaire nor the entertainment and mass media giant itself has officially commented on the media reports so far.
For SKYD shares, the potential benefit is financial flexibility. Additional equity can help support restructuring and tech spending as management combines Skydance with Warner Bros. Discovery.
Additionally, Musk’s involvement may also strengthen confidence in Ellison’s turnaround strategy. Still, investors should distinguish it from a commercial partnership.
Speculation about cooperation between Starlink and Skydance remains unconfirmed, and the reported investment alone establishes neither a distribution agreement nor a guaranteed improvement in earnings.
Skydance shares offer exposure to a potentially rewarding turnaround, but Musk’s involvement alone provides an incomplete investment case.
Management is targeting more than $6 billion in annualized savings within three years and net leverage of 3x by the end of 2029. Delivering on those commitments could bolster SKYD’s financial stature.
The challenge is converting integration plans into sustainable cash flow while protecting the appeal of its entertainment brands. Plus, investors need clarity on Musk’s investment terms to assess what it really means for the company.
All in all, caution is warranted. Evidence of realized savings, improving streaming economics, and declining leverage would provide a firmer foundation for buying than Musk’s reported endorsement alone.
Note that Barchart currently holds an “88% SELL” opinion on Skydance, indicating technical momentum is not currently in its favor.
On the flip side, Wall Street believes SKYD stock is undervalued and poised for significant gains in the months ahead.
The consensus rating on Skydance sits at “Hold” only, with the mean price objective of about $9.72 indicating potential for a 30% rally from here.
