AlphaValue/Baader Europe Sees UBS Threats to Leave Switzerland as 'Reckless Game of Poker'

11:35 AM EDT, 10/21/2026 (MT Newswires) -- AlphaValue/Baader Europe described UBS Group (UBSG.SW) executives' threats to abandon Switzerland over more stringent capital rules as a "reckless game of poker," mainly driven by their "fiduciary duty" to shareholders rather than the security of their clients. In a Wednesday note, the research firm expects the Swiss banking group, a global systemically important bank, to face major regulatory, tax and operational hurdles. While the group's potential relocation of its headquarters away from its home country is legally possible, it is also "unattractive" from an economic standpoint. "Ultimately, this corporate standoff is narrowing down to a personal and political clash: [UBS Chief Executive Officer] Sergio Ermotti and [Chairman] Colm Kelleher versus Swiss Finance Minister Karin Keller-Sutter," analysts said, adding that the government's primary duty is to the Swiss public. "As tensions peak, the government will not yield on regulations it views as existential to the nation's financial stability. If the friction becomes unmanageable, the institution will endure, but the individuals at the top may not. Karin Keller-Sutter and the government may be positioned to win this arm-wrestle. If push comes to shove, Kelleher & Ermotti will have to go. UBS will stay." The research firm has an add rating on the Swiss stock, with a price target of 45.7 francs.
