At a press conference held by the Information Office of the State Council this morning, Vice Minister of Ecology and Environment Li Gao explained that the Ministry of Ecology and Environment is working with relevant departments to further strengthen top-level design in an effort to reduce the risk and damage of climate change. The impact of climate change has continued to increase in recent years, and extreme disasters have caused major human casualties and property damage. Climate change is evolving from a hidden risk of the future to a real and urgent crisis. China is a climate change sensitive area and a region with significant impacts. In the context of climate change, various extreme disasters pose a serious threat to China's food production, ecological safety, infrastructure, urban operation, and people's lives and health. Li Gao explained that China adheres to the principle of equal emphasis on mitigation and adaptation, strengthens climate change monitoring, early warning and risk management, enhances the ability of key areas to adapt to climate change, promotes the integration of climate change adaptation into all fields and aspects of economic and social development, and enhances the risk prevention and health adaptation capabilities of vulnerable people. Thirty-one provinces across the country have issued adaptation action plans, and the “National Climate Change Health Adaptation Action Plan” has been issued in the field of public health and health. The Ministry of Ecology and Environment has guided 39 cities to deepen climate-adaptive city construction pilot projects, and has formed many good experiences and good practices, such as integrating adaptation to climate change into urban planning and layout, carrying out qualitative and quantitative climate change risk assessments, and using artificial intelligence to improve forecasting and early warning capabilities. Pilot cities such as Shenzhen, Haikou, and Chengdu are actively exploring the construction of climate-adaptive communities, with good results.
