What Investors Got Wrong Before PTT's Rally

Simply Wall St·10/19/2026 12:31:05
Listen to the news

If PTT sat on your watchlist instead of in your portfolio, the jump over the last year may feel like a missed shot. Investors who held PTT over the past year are up 43.7%, including dividends. That move came after analysts were split in October 2025 on whether LNG expansion and renewable energy spending would genuinely support profit margins. So what clue in those assumptions about future LNG and clean power projects might have helped you spot the potential earlier?

The useful thing about a Narrative is that the reasoning is checkable: the assumptions sit beside the argument, and together they imply an estimated Fair Value you can disagree with.

The Two Stories PTT Investors Had To Weigh

The shares cost THB30.25 at the start of the period, and anyone looking at PTT then had to choose which future sounded more convincing.

The bullish narrative put Fair Value at THB34.27, or 13% above the start price, hinging on LNG expansion and renewable projects that assumed revenue growth of 0.5% and a future profit margin of 3.7% within three years.

The bearish view pointed to a Fair Value of THB26, or 14% below the start price. It stressed ESG regulation and oil overcapacity, with a key risk that global energy transition pressures would erode hydrocarbon profitability.

What The Results Changed For The PTT Thesis

PTT then reported Q2 2026 revenue of THB830,389.29m and net income of THB52,524.59m, alongside a net margin of 6.3% versus 3.2% a year earlier. That shift supported the view that LNG and cleaner power spending could lift profitability, although one quarter of stronger earnings and higher margin still does not settle the longer term ESG and overcapacity concerns.

The useful test here is the net margin assumption. When a story leans on efficiency or mix improvements, investors can track reported margin against the narrative and see how quickly or slowly it moves toward the forecast level.

What PTT's Current Price Already Assumes

PTT now trades at THB41, up 43.7% over the past year on a total return basis. The selected Narrative places its Fair Value below that level and frames today’s quote as already baking in resilient earnings and meaningful benefits from LNG, decarbonization and digital efficiency plans.

To judge that price, you would need to ask what must keep going right for LNG build out, CCS and hydrogen projects, asset sales and cost programs so that these translate into durable, high quality earnings rather than one off gains and pressured refining and petrochemical margins.

"The current valuation implies the share price already reflects resilient profits around recent levels and meaningful payoff from LNG growth, decarbonization projects and digital profit enhancement, which suggests there may be limited room for disappointment if these plans underdeliver."
